The main difference between X-ray and digital radiography (DR) is that X-rays use film to capture images, while DR uses an electronic sensor to capture images digitally:
X-rays
Use film to capture images, which are then chemically processed and developed in a darkroom. X-rays emit more radiation than digital X-rays and require the creation of hard copies that must be stored securely.
DR
Uses an X-ray sensitive flat panel detector to capture images digitally. The detector converts X-ray energy into an electrical signal, which is then processed and displayed on a computer screen. DR images are available immediately for viewing and can be easily manipulated.
DR has several advantages over X-rays, including:
Reduced radiation exposure: DR significantly reduces the amount of radiation a patient is exposed to.
Image quality: DR images are sharper and more accurate than X-ray images.
Image manipulation: DR images can be easily manipulated.
